DISTORTIONS Mehul Sampat, Mia Markey, Alan Bovik The University of Texas at Austin e-mail: [email protected] Screening mammography, x-ray imaging of the breast, is currently the most effective tool for early detection of breast cancer. However mammography is not perfect. Detection of suspicious abnormalities is a repetitive, fatiguing and extremely difficult task for radiologists. A number of computer-aided detection (CAD) systems have been developed to aid radiologists to detect the common signs of breast cancer. However these systems have much higher detection accuracy for calcifications than for masses or architectural distortions. Thus, there is a need for improvement in the detection of these abnormalities. In this work we present a new technique for the detection of spiculated masses (SM) and architectural distortions (AD).

Evidence Based Detection of Spiculated Masses and Architectural Distortions
Mass detection algorithms generally consist of two stages. The aim of the first stage is to detect all potential masses. In the second stage, the aim is to reduce the false-positives by classifying the detected objects as masses or normal tissue. In this paper, we present a new evidence based, stage-one algorithm for the detection of spiculated masses and architectural distortions. By evidence ...
متن کاملSpiculated Lesions and Architectural Distortions Detection in Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Datasets
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) is a new 3D imaging technique aiming at overcoming some limitations of mammography. A computer aided detection system may help the radiologist to process the increased amount of data of this new modality. In this paper we propose to address the detection of masses and architectural distortions in DBT datasets. To achieve this task, we propose a detection schem...
متن کاملModel based approach for Detection of Architectural Distortions and Spiculated Masses in Mammograms
This paper investigates detection of Architectural Distortions (AD) and spiculated masses in mammograms based on their physical characteristics. We have followed a model based approach which separates the abnormal patterns of AD and spiculated masses from normal breast tissue. The model parameters are retrieved from Gabor filters which characterize the texture features and synthetic patterns we...
متن کاملComputer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis in Mammography
Screening mammography is the most effective tool for early detection of breast cancer. In this procedure, radiologists scan x-ray images of the breast to locate signs of breast cancer. However it is not perfect and has low sensitivity for detection and low specificity for diagnosis. Various computer aided detection (CAD) and diagnosis (CADx) systems have been developed to aid radiologists. In t...
متن کاملModel-based detection of spiculated lesions in mammograms
Computer-aided mammographic prompting systems require the reliable detection of a variety of signs of cancer. In this paper we concentrate on the detection of spiculated lesions in mammograms. A spiculated lesion is typically characterized by an abnormal pattern of linear structures and a central mass. Statistical models have been developed to describe and detect both these aspects of spiculate...
